FLAT LAPPING MACHINES
These Lapping Machines are precision engineered to lap, or polish all types of hard materials to a very high degree of surface finishes.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
An accurately conditioned lapping plate rotates in the horizontal plane, on which, conditioning rings, also rotating freely in the direction of the lapping plate, carry the work pieces, with the surface to be lapped, in contact with the lapping plate. Suitably mixed lapping compound is fed onto the lapping plate, which laps/polishes the surface to be lapped, and the flatness of the lapping plate is transferred to the workpiece.

CONSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES

BASE
A rigid, fabricated, box type construction, houses the driving mechanism consisting of motor, gearboxes, pulleys etc.
It has a provision for raising or lowering the table, surrounding the lapping plate, so that the height of the guide rollers can be suitably adjusted when the lapping plate thickness gets reduced. In the larger models, proper provision is made for the operators to climb onto the table, if need be.
A swarf collection tray surrounds the lapping plate, and has an inclined bottom, to empty the swarf through a spout, into a bigger tank situated at the base.

SPINDLE
A heavy duty spindle, mounted on precision bearings in a rigid housing, takes care of any eccentric load on the lapping plate. These bearings take almost all the load of the heavy lapping plate, hence the gear box is not loaded directly, thereby reducing the starting torque of the motor. This system is maintenance-free and is lubricated for life.

LAPPING PLATE
These plates are made out of cast iron, glass, tin, copper, etc, depending upon the material to be lapped. The plates can be plain, or grooved, in various patterns, such as circular, radial, spiral, square or a combination of some of them. Once again, the pattern depends upon the materials, and stock removal required.
DRIVE UNIT
Main spindle is driven by an electric motor, via a reduction unit, v-belts & CI pulleys. If required an AC variable drive can be supplied to vary the rpm of lapping plates/discs.

CONDITIONING RINGS
These rings are made of cast iron and rotate freely due to the friction offered by the lapping Plate & the guide rollers. The bottom periphery is serrated, to enable the lapping compound to flow freely in and out, along with the swarf that is generated. Number of conditioning rings, depends on the diameter of the Lapping plate.
DEAD WEIGHT
Made of cast iron, these weights provide the pressure on the work pieces, due to which abrasion takes place, directly proportional to the pressure and the abrasives used. A provision is made to keep on adding weights, upto a maximum limit.

LAPPING COMPOUND FEEDER
Generally the lapping compound is fed manually, but if required, a feeding unit can be provided, that doses the plate with abrasive, and can be regulated and controlled.
CONTROL PANEL
Coupled to the base of the machine, this houses a timer controlled motor, and depending upon the requirement, a variable speed drive along with all the switches etc. can also be provided.

OPTIONAL FEATURES

A re-circulation system for the lapping compound can be provided for rough laping, as the re-circulation is undesirable in fine lapping.

Self-dressing system for lapping plate.

Dozing pump for the lapping compound.

Multispeed pulley arrangement, or an infinitely variable speed drive.

Canopy to guard against any dust or dirt failing accidentally.
